AWS ❤️ Spinnaker
Dec 5, 2019 by DROdio
Paul Roberts, Principal Solutions Architect, Strategic Accounts at AWS, shared at re:Invent how deeply AWS is backing Spinnaker, due to strong enterprise customer demand.
“AWS realized that customers wanted a single platform to deploy applications to multiple AWS targets.” – Paul Roberts, AWS
AWS started contributing to Spinnaker 18 months ago, and yesterday Paul announced full Lambda support for Spinnaker (including in the Spinnaker UI).
Paul’s talk also helps highlight how Spinnaker is much more than a “CD tool” – it’s a software delivery orchestration platform that helps AWS customers take full advantage of AWS targets like EC2, Lambda, ECS, EKS and Fargate that would otherwise be inaccessible or difficult for them to start using.
Paul shared two customer quotes, from Autodesk and Salesforce:
- Brandon Leach, Sr. Engineering Manager at Autodesk shared how Spinnaker improves developer velocity across multiple targets.
- Dilip Pai, Sr. Director, Software Engineering at Salesforce shared how Salesforce is leveraging Spinnaker to standardize deployments to EKS.
“A lot of the re:Invent workshops are using Spinnaker to deploy the code to them.” – Paul Roberts, AWS

Even more incredible is to see the depth of the Spinnaker community coming to light. There are over 2,400 contributors to the Spinnaker project, including Netflix, Google, Armory, AWS, Pivotal, Apple, Nike, Microsoft, Adobe, Alibaba, Huawei, SAP, Salesforce, HP, Samsung, NTT, Uber, Cisco, JPMorgan Chase, IBM, Datadog, Oracle, The Home Depot, Volvo, Accenture, Ericsson and many, many others.
Paul spoke after Andy Glover of Netflix. You can watch the full keynote here, but below is the video beginning with Paul’s portion:
