Bright Future: Spinnaker Summit Wrap

Nov 19, 2019 by Adam Frank

OK folks, put your sunglasses on. The warm glow that’s always emanated from the Spinnaker community is becoming a blinding light. We wrapped the 3rd annual, largest-ever Spinnaker Summit yesterday evening with over 500 attendees getting 3 days of hands-on training, use case deep dives, business solution analysis, roadmap peeks, SIG sync-ups, and memorable social and networking opportunities.

A great place to learn more about what took place is this keynote, which features the following infrastructure leaders talking about how they are using Spinnaker at their companies:

Spinnaker Enables Roundabouts, not Stoplights. Context over Control.

As a newcomer, the striking similarities between all of the Spinnaker, cloud-native deployment, continuous delivery, and digital transformation stories surprised me. Whether they were leveraging Kubernetes, undergoing a cloud migration, or still evaluating solutions for software delivery, everyone touched on common threads. The gist? Pain points around relying on brittle, scripted paths to production, and the transformational impact that Spinnaker poses to their work.

Pere Kyle of Snap, Inc. gave an inspiring presentation Saturday, “Spinnaker At Scale for Snap’s Multi Cloud Service Mesh.” One of his slides really stuck out in summing up these common threads:

This slide was part of Armory’s mega-keynote, which included a truly inspiring opening message from CTO Isaac Mosquera as well as guest presentations from 7 (yes, 7!) successful Spinnaker users above including Pinterest, AirBnb, Sony PlayStation Networks, Salesforce, Discovery Communications, Snap Inc., and New Relic. The message I heard was: yes, Kubernetes is a first-class citizen of Spinnaker, but you don’t have to undertake the gargantuan lift of migrating all services to K8S in order to start enjoying delightful continuous deployments. Spinnaker will meet your enterprise where it is today.

We were so touched (our CEO DROdio was crying happy tears) at the outpouring of community spirit and evangelism we experienced during and after the presentation. My perception: the Spinnaker community is hungry for more opportunities to learn together, build together, and solve together. This project is gaining momentum as the most mature continuous delivery platform and the only one that truly embraces the multi-cloud.

Luckily, Armory has hired ME to give the people what they want : ) Stay tuned for new Armory-sponsored events across the meetup community, Spinnaker’s first open-source hackathon, expanded training materials, and much much more. Meanwhile, start by joining us on the Spinnaker Slack, which is 8,259 strong as of this moment. And check out this photo of my INCREDIBLE Armory tribe that was at the Summit sharing knowledge, doing demos, volunteering, speaking and more:

With lots of love (for Spinnaker of course),
